Exploring Los Angeles: Part 1

I arrived in Los Angeles late Saturday night and didn’t go to bed until early Sunday morning, which was more like late Sunday morning in Raleigh.

No surprise, Emily and I slept in Sunday morning.  We enjoyed a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs and gluten-free chocolate chip muffins.  Then we decided to get out for a while and went to the Anneberg Space for Photography where they had a War Photography exhibit.  It was violent and graphic at times, but it captured the realities that we often sweep to the side and try to ignore.  It was very powerful and I would recommend you go see it if you have the chance.  We followed this up with some grocery shopping so I could make Coconut Milk Chicken Masala for dinner.

Monday Emily had to go to class and do her research like a good little graduate student, so I bravely headed out on my own.  Armed with one map of the UCLA campus and a few directions I gathered online, I went out to try my hand at the public transportation system.  Long story short I ended up on the bus that took the scenic route to the metro stop.  While it took longer, I got to see quite a bit of Beverly Hills and downtown.  After the bus I switched to two different lines of the metro and arrived at my desired station and realized that the University of Southern California was behind me.

I took a few quick pictures of USC and then headed on to the Exposition Park Rose Garden and the California Space Center.

The rose garden far exceeded the one in Raleigh in sheer size and variety.  I ate a picnic lunch under one of the gazebos.

Then I went on to the Space Center.  While this is mostly a comprehensive science museum for kids, they have several exhibits that are interesting for adults as well.  They have a two-story aquarium filled with salt-water sea life.  There were divers in the tank checking on some of the animals.

The highlight of the museum was getting to see the Space Shuttle Endeavor.  It is enormous!  It filled the entire hanger it was parked in.

They had also put together a short video of how they flew it in on the back of NASA’s airplane and pulled it though the streets of Los Angeles until it reached the museum.

The bus ride back went through the ghetto and areas that were clearly tagged my gangs.  I got a little taste of everything in just one day.
